Carthage North Carolina & Moore County Area History

The Heart Of North Carolina's Sandhills!
Amid Beautiful Tree-Lined Streets And Picturesque Homes

The town's growth from 1850 to 1929 was mostly due to the booming buggy manufacturing industry. At one point, Carthage became the "Detroit" of the horse-drawn carriage. Henry Ford himself even visited here when first honing his own ideas of automobile mass production.

Even though Carthage was the home to one of the world's biggest buggy manufacturing plants (the Tyson and Jones Carriage Works), it was all but made obsolete by 1925 due to the rise of Ford's own horseless carriage.

Carthage's glory days are not completely gone. Each Saturday before Mother's Day the annual Carthage Buggy Festival brings back a taste of the good old days.

It seems like over the years, life and its many activities have revolved around the Carthage courthouse. The courthouse site, in the middle of Moore County, was selected by the state legislature. The rest of the town was laid out in 1803 and Carthage was named the official county seat in 1804.
